How To Adjust A uPVC Door
A step-by-step guide from CIS Windows on how to adjust your uPVC door to fix draughts or issues with catching. Learn how to adjust height, lateral position, and compression.
Tools & Safety First
Before you start, make sure you have the correct tools. For this job, you'll need: Allen Key (usually 5mm), Phillips Screwdriver. When adjusting, make small turns and check the door's operation frequently. It's often best to have someone help you by taking the weight of the door when making vertical adjustments.

Step 1: Identify Your Hinge Type
Most uPVC doors use 'flag' hinges which allow for three-way adjustment. Look for adjustment screws on the top, front, and side of the hinge body. You'll typically need an Allen key for this.

Step 2: Adjusting the Height (Vertical Adjustment)
If your door is dragging on the floor, you need to raise it. Locate the adjustment screw at the bottom of the hinge. Using your Allen key, turn it clockwise to raise the door and anti-clockwise to lower it. Adjust all hinges equally, a little at a time, checking the door's movement after each adjustment.

Step 3: Side-to-Side Adjustment (Lateral Adjustment)
If the door is catching on the lock side of the frame, you'll need to move it side-to-side. This is usually done via a screw on the side of the hinge arm. Turning this screw will move the door sash closer to or further away from the hinge. Again, make small, equal adjustments to all hinges.

Step 4: Adjusting for Draughts (Compression Adjustment)
If you feel a draught, the door isn't sealing tightly against the frame. This is fixed by adjusting the compression. This screw is often on the top of the hinge or accessed from the front. Turning it pulls the door sash tighter against the weather seals, creating a firmer close. Don't make it too tight, as this can make the door difficult to lock.
